AttractionsGustave Eiffel, the architect of the Eiffel Tower would never have guessed that the tower would have become Paris's signature sight. It was built to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution. It was considered a blemish and there were petitions to pull it down. It was saved because it had become a vital antenna for telegraphy. Until 1930 it was the world's tallest building. Notre-Dame- the Cathedral is considered one of the of the world's Gothic masterpieces. The 387-step climb to the top is worth the effort for the panoramic view of the city and close-up views of the gargoyles. The tower also has the great bell that was rung by Quasimodo, the fictional hunchback. There is a museum that displays the Cathedral's history. One of the world's great art museums, the Louvre has an extraordinary collection of paintings, sculptures and antiquities from all over the world. The best-known attraction is Leonardo da Vinci's mysterious Mona Lisa, protected by bullet-proof glass in its own room. |
