Mallorca's landscape varies from dramatic mountains in the north west across the fertile plains to the coves and superb sandy beaches in the east.

The capital, Palma, is a bustling, historic place with a magnificent Gothic cathedral. Around the cathedral is the Portela Quarter, "Old Palma", with alleyways and small lanes. Beside the cathedral is Paseo Borne, a garden promenade as well as boulevard with good and cheap restaurants.

Palma Nova is a lively resort with a sandy beach and lots of watersports, popular with British holiday makers. It is a good choice for all ages looking for a lively atmosphere and a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Next to it is Mallorca's liveliest resort, Magaluf, offering plenty of activities and entertainment, as well as a constant party atmosphere in the summer.

A bit further is Santa Ponsa, a pretty resort that has grown around a wide and recessed bay surrounded by pines and sandy beaches, with good watersports facilities.

In the north of the island, at the end of Mallorca's longest beach is the popular resort of Alcudia, perfect for watersports and ideal for families. The old town dates back to Roman times and there are plenty of restaurants and bars.

Nestled on a cliffside, the quiet and modern resort of Calas de Mallorca offers some of the island's most spectacular scenery. The resort has two sandy beaches and a good choice of shops, restaurants and bars.

Magalluf is Mallorca's liveliest resort, with a vast selection of bars, discos and a constant party atmosphere in the summer. The sandy beach is fantastic and offers plenty of watersports activities.

Intertwined with Magalluf, Palma Nova is flanked by two sandy beaches. The seafront marina offers watersports and a promenade lined with cafes, bars and restaurants. Palma Nova is a good choice for all ages looking for a lively atmosphere.

Santa Ponsa: This is a pretty resort that has grown around a wide and recessed bay surrounded by pines and sandy beaches, with good watersports facilities, boat trips and an 18 hole golf course.

Conveniently located between Palma city and Palma Nova, Portals Nous is a quieter residential area surrounding a luxury marina, with a selection of chic boutiques and cafe bars. The area has a small sandy beach and a golf course nearby.

Port Adriano: Located on the western side of the bay of Palma, around 10 minutes drive from Santa Ponsa, this is a relaxing spot with a small beach and a yacht marina with some bars and shops, and golf courses in the area.Mallorca's bus service is quite good and there are also a couple of train lines. By car, Palma is within three hours' drive of the island's further corner.

Getting to your hotel:

By bus:

Palma airport, 11km east of the city, is connected by bus Nr 17, which can be found outside the main entrance of the terminal building, to the Plaza Espanya in Palma (buses leave every 15 mins from 6am to 9.30pm, every 30 mins afterwards). The journey takes approximately 30 mins and costs 2 Euros.

By taxi:

A taxi direct to the centre will take approx. 20 mins and cost about 15 Euros.
For Alcudia, a taxi direct from the airport will take approx. one hour and cost 50 to 60 Euros.

Other transport:

Palma Nova and Magaluf are approximately 30 to 40 mins by car from the airport.

Finding your way around is fairly easy once you are in the centre. Around the Cathedral is the Portela Quarter, "Old Palma", with alleyways and small lanes. Beside the Cathedral is Paseo Borne, a garden promenade as well as boulevard with good and cheap restaurants.

Mallorca's bus service is quite good and there are also a couple of train lines.

Shopping:

Shop opening hours vary but most of them are open from 9.30am to 8pm with a lunch and siesta break between 1.30 and 5pm.
