Getting around:If you don't mind a good full day's walking, Rome is ideal to explore on foot, with every corner you turn unveiling a new building or piazza of historical and cultural interest. However, some sights such as the Vatican and Castel St Angelo are a bit further out. The best way to get around the city is by public transport. Bus/tram tickets can be bought in advance from news stands and tobacconists, but you will need change for the metro. Only use the yellow and white licensed taxis, and check the meter before paying. Ignore all touts at the airport and at Termini station as they are likely to charge you 4 times the official rate! Also be aware of pickpockets especially in the area of the Colosseum and Vatican. Other important information:In line with Italian Law, most hotels will still offer the option of smoking rooms but smoking will be banned in all public areas of the hotel including the reception, restaurants, breakfast rooms etc. However, some premises will have a separate area for smokers where ventilation is installed.
