Our opinion:

Independent, family run hotel with great location in a quiet, residential street near the museums and lively Leidseplein. The lobby in particular is quite unusual with some great features including a traditional English telephone box and some old airline seats. Well maintained bedrooms are quite plain with cream walls and colourful furnishings. Atmospheric bar adjoining the lobby. Good value property with lots of character.

King (shared facilities)

Our opinion:

Set in a small traditional Dutch house this is an extremely basic hotel with shared facilities comprising of a shower/wc on each floor. It enjoys a superb canal side location in a quiet street adjacent to Leidseplein. As there is no lift in the hotel guests must climb very steep stairs in order to reach the clean, compact bedrooms. Officially a 1 star hotel, however we think it offers excellent value for money but is strictly suited to students and those on a tight budget.

Located near the Leidseplein and Rijksmuseum with easy access to all other parts of the centre. Bedrooms and bathrooms are old fashioned and in need of renovation but are kept clean. Although in need of refurbishment, with its great location this hotel represents good value for money for those with limited funds.

Our opinion:

A large hotel on the outskirts of the city centre but with good public transport links. Tram no. 9 stop which goes direct to Rembrandtplein, Dam Square and Central Station is approximately ten minutes walk away. Open as a hotel in summer only as it is used as student accommodation for the rest of the year. Bedrooms with blue and grey decor are simple but well maintained. There is a large restaurant as well as a spacious bar area with an outside terrace. A good value for money out of town option.

Our opinion:

Typical Amsterdam property with a superb location right behind Dam Square, bordering the red light district. Simple bedrooms are clean and brightly decorated with a few of the upper rooms offering nice views over the city. The hotel also has an 8 room annexe property, 200 yards along the road - guests allocated these rooms, will return to the main building for breakfast. Our opinion:

This former Roman Catholic Orphanage has been gradually renovated to create a rather unique 3 star hotel with rooms of all shapes and sizes, long corridors and high ceilings. The decoration is distinctly fashionable and the hotel has a fun atmosphere. Cafe restaurant and bar with sun terrace and a decent size garden for a city hotel. Our opinion:

Situated in a residential area on the outskirts of the city centre close to Artis Zoo. Hotel has recently undergone extensive refurbishments and is now of a very good standard. Our opinion:

Charming little hotel situated in a quiet residential area close to the Vondelpark, within easy walking distance of The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum. Although part of a chain, this hotel has so far retained its individuality. The small lobby with its lemon decor and wooden floors is full of antique furnishings and has lots of character. Superb location on Rembrandt Square. Bedrooms are pleasantly decorated in bold blue, yellow and green with dark furniture and although well equipped are looking a little tired. NH City Centre

Our opinion:

Large hotel with superb central location on the Spuistraat, a quiet street in the centre of town with many bars and some good restaurants. Although the interior of the property is very modern, the building is very historical. Some original features such as the staircase have been retained and numerous pictures in the main bar show the building as it was in the 1900's as a clothing factory. The spacious lobby has a seating area with views of the Singel canal and there is also a comfortable winter garden where guests can unwind. Die Port Van Cleve

Our opinion:

Traditional hotel with a superb central location just across from Dam Square and adjacent to the popular Magna Plaza Shopping Centre. The bedrooms are relatively modern in style and well equipped. 'Die Poort' restaurant with adjoining cafe is full of character and legendary for its steaks, which since 1870, they have served with a token showing what number steak it is to be served. Our opinion:

Great location adjacent to the flower market and within easy walking distance of Rembrandtplein. Large hotel with welcoming marble lobby that has its Italian origins very much in evidence throughout. Bedrooms are pleasantly decorated in pastel shades although in a rather dated style. Informal atmospheric Italian restaurant facing onto the main street is a popular meeting place for lunches and coffees amongst the locals. A more formal Italian restaurant located on the first floor is rather opulent and has a very good reputation in the city.

NH Doelen

Our opinion:

Lovely location between Rembrandtplein and Dam Square, along the River Amstel. Dating back to 1883, this historic hotel is one of the oldest in the city and for years was the hotel of choice for visiting celebrities. With its marble floor and chandeliers, the hotel has maintained its majestic air. Several of the hotel's original features such as its staircase have been retained and on one floor part of the wall on which Rembrandt painted his famous Nightwatch can even be seen. Brightly decorated rooms are traditional in style and vary in size due to the shape of the building. Although well equipped the rooms would benefit from some refurbishment as some of the furnishings are looking somewhat tired. Fabulous river views can be enjoyed from the elegantly styled restaurant. Hotel has its own private jetty and hires its boat out to guests interested in taking excursions.

Very traditional Art Deco style property with lots of character located in the heart of the city on Rembrandtplein. Built in 1912, many of the hotel's original features have been retained. Quality accommodation close to the airport at an excellent price. Ideal as an alternative to the centre on busy weekends.
